A city break is one of the easiest holidays to plan: a short flight, two or three nights, and lots to see. Some cities give you much more for your money than others.
Kraków, Poland
A beautiful old town, a huge market square and lots of history. Food and drink are usually much cheaper than in the UK. Flights are about 2.5 hours and there are many routes from UK airports. Lovely at Christmas market time.
Budapest, Hungary
Grand buildings, the river Danube and famous thermal baths. A great choice for a winter break, because the outdoor baths are warm even when it is cold. Flights are about 2.5 hours.
Prague, Czech Republic
A fairytale old town and a famous castle. It gets busy in summer and at Christmas, so try spring or autumn for better hotel prices.
Lisbon and Porto, Portugal
Sunny, friendly and full of character. Lisbon has hills, trams and viewpoints. Porto is smaller, with the river and port wine cellars. Both are pleasant even in winter.
Seville and Valencia, Spain
Seville is great in spring and autumn (it is very hot in summer). Valencia has a beach, a lovely old town and the home of paella. Both have many cheap flights from the UK.
Gdańsk, Poland and Riga, Latvia
Less famous, but pretty old towns by the sea, often with lower hotel prices than the big names.
Tips for a cheap city break
- Travel with cabin bag only. For two or three nights you rarely need a big case.
- Stay near a metro or tram line rather than right in the centre.
- Mid-week stays (Sunday to Wednesday) are often cheaper than weekends.
- Eat your main meal at lunch time. Many restaurants have a cheaper lunch menu.
- Book a hotel with free cancellation, then keep checking the price.
